The Abbotshall Road Healthy Lifestyles Centre
DUE TO OPEN MAY BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND 2015
After three years of negotiations with the Council, Community Teachsport, a not for profit community interest company, has finally signed a 25 year lease at a peppercorn rent to manage the Abbotshall Road Playing Field on the understanding it regenerates the playing surface and replaces the existing pavilion and changing rooms with a new community healthy lifestyles centre. The highlighted plans give an idea of the layout of the ground and of how the building will look and the uses the playing field and building will be put to.
This development has prevented the field becoming derelict, as the Council no longer has a budget to maintain it and has removed the possibility of the site being used for fly tipping or by travellers.
The Centre will be open weekdays and at weekends with activity finishing around 6.30pm, unless an evening booking is made by prior arrangement. All residents are very welcome to use the café and relax in the community garden and maybe even do some planting. Anyone wishing to volunteer will be welcomed with open arms.
The Healthy Lifestyles Centre is very much a community project and will be the hub for the Healthy Lifestyles and Employment Opportunities for All campaign being run jointly by The Archibald Corbett Society and Community Teachsport. A steering group of stakeholders will be set up to meet quarterly to plan the future development of the project and deal with current issues. This will include The Corbett Residents Association who will be using the field and building for their regular events.
The field has now been resurfaced and seeded and will be ready for use for cricket and football and general use by the beginning of May.
Demolition of the existing buildings is due to happen in early February and the new modular is being constructed off site and will be dropped in by crane a la ‘Grand Designs’ at the end of March early April.
We look forward to working together with Community Teachsport and with you as local residents to develop the Healthy Lifestyles Centre and if anyone would like to get involved further as a volunteer or to sit on the steering group, please get in touch.
